Aodien – A’dien – we’ve been buried in a landslide of ideas for your dragon and trust you can pick through the rubble of our creative avalanche and find bits and pieces that make Sanuyeth work for you: companion, comrade, ally, trouble, and friend, we know you will make your lifemate come alive. For you we’ve chosen a lion of a dragon, a mountain lion: elusive, graceful, powerful and dangerous. May he always bring you joy, adventure, and lots and lots of RP.

Those with cougar medicine have past life connections relating to power and leadership. When the cougar selects you as its student be prepared for the ride of your life. It can shred you into little pieces (dissolve karma and identity) then put you back together again with a pure heart and purpose. True leadership through gentle assertiveness is what cougar teaches those with this totem.

Fire and Ash Egg
From the depths of a dark, earthen base rises the grand steep slopes of a majestic mountain. Oval curves are somewhat skewed to the naked eye by striations and chasms the somber hues of rock and stone that draw one's view along jagged lines and unexpected twists. Molten embers stir within those depths, growing brighter as the crevices grow and widen until the apex is a glorious riot of red-hot lava just waiting to burst forth and coat those slopes in rivers of roiling molten red. The Spirit of Fire and Ash seethes within its confines, mostly hidden but none-the-less spectacularly potent.

Hatch Message:
Churning heat presses harsh against earthen crevices, a quake of violent magnitude distorting this egg’s hardened surface. In an instant fissures spread like forked lightening in a malevolent storm, rendering the once perfect shape asunder. There will be no denying the feline of a bronze that erupts from the depths of the earth, jutting wingspars and tail lashing as this new mountain is formed.

In the Shadow of the Mountain Lion Bronze Dragonet
The promise of majesty, elegance, and stealth, of a powerful bulk, is yet cloaked in the immature charm and erratic movements of a young dragonet. From the dark depths of blunted paws rises the grand steep slopes of his mighty limbs whose ebon striping matches the inky spots that sweeps down along the jagged spires of his spine and spread across his flanks as if the darkness of his muzzle and eye-marking kohl has spattered across his hide. Beneath the ferruginous highlights, rum-drunk bronze spills more liquid than tiger’s eye, blending the intoxication of amber with the cinnamon-rufous of spice and fire. His wings temper hide’s raw spirits with oak and leather, distilling the more brazen hues to a rich and smoky brown that seethes to red only at the very ends of his perilous spars.

Impression Message (Private):
In the Shadow of the Mountain Lion Bronze Dragonet has prowled the sands far and wide in Search of that perfect prey. And now He has found you Aodien. Feel the power of this bronze dragonet as he resonates around you, dances within you and bolsters your spirit to ever new heights. «A’dien?» In mind’s sight as in physical, his eerie, unwavering stare bores into you, etching his desires, his wants, his /needs/ into your very core. «I am». Lands will crumble and reform and tower beyond all conceivable imagination. «We are.» Pure, strong, and bold. «A'dien. Sanuyeth.»

Impression Message (Public): The not-quite stalk of the Shadow of the Mountain Lion Bronze Dragonet comes faltering to a pause in front of a young man who tends to hide both the physical scars and the emotional claims upon him. The dragonet's tail twitches, his head weaves as if trying to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of his mark, and then swirling eyes of red-hunger wash through with momentary blush of pleased blue. The dragonet shifts and tilts his head, so that one eye, then the next, then the both of them peer into Aodien's, taking the full and ultimate possession of the his Weyrling.

Dragon Name
Sanuyeth. Because Nomi liked it and Thad thought it sexy. It comes from Sanuya, the Hopi word for 'red cloud at sundown', which suits his description and plays with the shadow in the mountain flavor to him. Plus – Red cloud at night, pirate’s delight? I say ‘San-you-eth’, but whatever works in your head. And I will forever misspell him as Sunayeth… and now you will too. (Evil Nomi laughter).

Mind Voice
Sanuyeth is like thunder rolling off a steep mountainside, his growly tones will reverberate within every crevice of your being. It will never be too loud, or too harsh as he is the quiet before the storm when speaking directly and totally with you. At other times, his voice fades to the dance of whispering winds rustling the tall evergreens and sheer valleys of the bond you two share.

Mind Scent
Like the coastal rain-forests of the Pacific Northwest, Sanuyeth's scent will always carry with it a mixture of salt water and evergreens. Fresh cedar crests and caps of his lingering thoughts, often leaving any (and particularly the ladies) wanting just a little more.

Physical Voice
One word: Subtle. It will leave those around him wondering just /where/ that noise came from, so barely there it was. Only you will know it was he who spoke, be it in protest or agreement, or some added comment to the topic at hand. He trusts you, should the need arise to relay any pertinent comment to those otherwise unable to hear his mental queue. Only in those rare moments of infinite rage (when rising in the heat of a mating flight or to meet the threat of Thread in battle) while he utter any true sound. It will resonate only once, piercing the silence of day or night alike, a singular warning that he has taken up arms with you at his side.

Physicality

Sanuyeth, as a dragonet, has that physical charm of a kitten — all intention and not nearly as much coordination. Struck and attentive to moving objects, his 'prey-drive' is strong, and A'dien will have to spend a great deal of time finding /who/ or /what/ Sanuyeth has followed, and where his little spotted bronze is, this time - he has his grandsire Xanth's propensity to climb, to get into trouble, and to try to lure attracted females also into trouble. There is, initially, no real dignity, but a sort of self-awareness that Sanuyeth will develop as he realizes that he might be watched or, worse, laughed at. He will, in short order, develop the trademark, 'I meant to do that' attitude that seems intrinsic to all cats. Sitting and self-grooming may be a habit that takes him some time to grow out of, after failures. Perhaps, eventually, only the vocalization will be left: « I meant to do that. »

Sanuyeth (Elder)
Majesty, elegance, and stealth – a mountain feline’s predatory grace commands the smooth musculature of this large dragon and refines his powerful bulk into something sleeker, slimmer, and much more dangerous. From the dark depths of blunted paws rises the grand steep slopes of his mighty limbs whose ebon striping matches the inky shadow that sweeps down along the jagged spires of his spine. Black likewise prowls along his muzzle and kohls the curves of his valiant, variable gaze. Beneath the ferruginous highlights, rum-drunk bronze spills more liquid than tiger’s eye, blending the intoxication of amber with the ruddy cinnamon-rufous of spice and fire. His wings temper hide’s raw spirits with oak and leather, distilling the more brazen hues to a rich and smoky brown that seethes to red only at the very ends of his perilous spars.

Eating
Active on the ground, when hunting, Sanuyeth prefers the stalk/leap method of taking down his prey. He is a scent-hunter, so may well prefer creatures that have a certain odor to them - strong, in their type, less dusty, perhaps those who have waded in water before they rolled in dust. Very dirty creatures are far less appealing to this dragon. If hunting out of the pens, Sanuyeth has a strong preference for bushy, partially-wooded areas, never mind the danger they might pose to his wings, in performing a landing kill, with those sorts of barriers. Herdbeasts are much better than wherries. Runners, are much better than herdbeasts. And he prefers male prey.

Aging
Tails - tails are a hopeless fascination for him (comes from his grand-dam Sidijith). He is playful to an extreme, and likes to spar with his siblings, play-fight, stalk, pounce. As he ages, though, Sanuyeth will find more solitary activities to his liking, though if he develops strong friendships with his siblings, or other dragons, at this age, he will continue those. His growth is not extraordinary; he will reach a respectable size for a bronze, and coordination will come with practice, as opposed to time. And, besides sleep, Sanuyeth will like to practice, play. He is either 'off' or 'on', having no real middle-ground of activity, and this particular trait will stretch into adulthood. Resting or hunting, sleeping or fighting Thread, sunning or chasing women. He is idle or entirely committed to motion, only rarely found in the middle grounds between one state and the other. As he ages, Sanuyeth's spots will fade; maturity will find him entirely free of any of those marks of his childhood. Rowr.

Mating Flights
'Males maximize their reproductive success by mating with as many females as possible'. — Sounds kind of like the old Aodien, doesn't it? Annnnnnnnnd… It sounds like Sanuyeth. Greens. Golds. Golds. Greens. More greens. More golds. Lots of greens. Lots of golds. That said, Sanuyeth does have the propensity to devote himself for the entirety of a couple sevendays, to a green. Like his father, Kayth, he does enjoy fatherhood and will return to a gold (after the requisite two sevens) to guard a clutch of eggs that has been laid (though he'd enjoy fatherhood and clutch-guarding AGAIN if he happened to catch the next gold that rises, even if he happens to already be on the sands with one gold. This may lead to, for A'dien's dragon, the same sort of problems the rider has already encountered. « What do you mean, why did I rise? She Flew! » Good luck with that! /He/ is not a jealous dragon, in terms of mates, but he is, in terms of territory. Hostile to foreign dragons, he will, if he chooses violence during a flight, target them first… and go in for their most vulnerable parts.

Like the big cat on a hunt, Sanuyeth chases the females with power, skill, and intensity, but especially as a young dragon he might tend to make a madcap rush at the prize early on, in the flight. In part because he can’t sustain any huge amount of speed over the long distance – he’s built for stalking (gliding) and pouncing, not sustained chasing – and desire makes him rash and impatient. He might learn to use this to his advantage, later on.

Thread Fighting
Sanuyeth is a warrior, a messenger, and is wise enough to know when the enemy exceeds his abilities. Physically, he is well-able to last an entire fall, he flames well, and he shows uncanny awareness of where Thread is about to fall, so he is only rarely tinged. As well, he knows when he is tired, or A'dien is worn, and the bronze will, with or without orders, remove himself from the battle, so that he is well and hale the next battle. Sanuyeth sees the distant and the future, rather than the immediacy of /now/ dictating his actions solely through reaction. Wary, alert, elusive, he is the ultimate foe for Thread, and in that, a superb protector of both his wing, Weyr and protectorate. Caution marks his attacks, his strategies; he is not a risk-taker, nor rash in flight or fight.

Personality

Your cougar totem is supposed to teach you:

• To balance our power knowing when to act (pounce) and when to be still, retreating to return to the hunt later
• To assert ourselves when we have made a decision and take a leap
• The ability to respond to a challenge
• How take control of our life naturally with ease
• To assess the situation before making a move
• To follow the path of our own vision
• Teach us about leadership. Through choosing to walk our own path true to ourselves others will follow.
• Patience with others who do not act with such passion to relentlessly pursue a goal

Cougar medicine people make excellent teachers, leaders and facilitators.

Isolationist
Something of a watcher as an adult, Sanuyeth will interact, will convey message and strike up friendships, but he is not the gossip, and a secret told him will remain secret. Physically, he often isolates himself from others, sits on the distant ledge and studies the others. He learns, considers and shares tidbits with A'dien: «Appears that Fryth has a weakness in his upper right wing. » « Gloarth looks particularly green today; perhaps she is proddy. I will watch her. Do you fancy her rider? » These same comments (sans rider preferences) will be shared with any dragon that Sanuyeth trusts as Friend, and those dragons are, more than likely, Fort dragons.

Courageous (But NOT stupid)
Able to fine-tune the balance between knowing when to act and when to wait, Sanuyeth can make the decision and act on it, independently — be that decision to attack or retreat. He is his own dragon, and his decision may well meet with the annoyance of other dragons. While he will, as any dragon, concede to Queenly power, or that of a ranking dragon, within the ranks, he is a Leader, not follower. Given the opportunity to lead, Sanuyeth will excel, and he enjoys, prefers, being the boss rather than the bossed, the One, rather than among the Many. He responds intelligently, reasonably, to challenges and may have something of an impatience with A'dien's rash decisions based on pure emotion instead of practicality. « I understand you are loyal to him. But what is the evidence, that he is loyal to you? »

Cougar in pursuit, I seek your medicine
Teach me the way of walking my own path
I wish to know within me the time to pounce and the time to retreat
With my power in balance
Will I know this through assertiveness?
Cougar I am ready to learn

Teacher
Sanuyeth, once he has acquired some particular wisdom, knowledge, or skill, very willing to share that. He seeks to assist other dragons, breaking out of his often solitary existence in order to coach and, in his way, lead this other dragon to that knowledge. A good leader is bettered by fine and skilled followers, and Sanuyeth enjoys the role of mentor, to other dragons. Quiet, subdued, he is more the sort to send another dragon into an experience — to set up the situation to learn, rather than simply /tell/; that would be only showing an authority without cause, without reason. Instead, experience is the best lesson. Should Sanuyeth find himself in the position of teacher, he will be protective of his pupils, and not send them into overt danger.

Tester
A'dien, your dragon places you almost constantly, in situations that might test you. It's his version of being YOUR self-appointed teacher. And, of course, like any teacher, Sanuyeth thinks HIS way is the Right way and has a dubious regard of alternative methods, though he is willing to accept them if those methods prove their worth. Perhaps your swimming skills are not up to par…? « A'dien, I will meet you at the shore. Let me know, if you are having problems.» — And you will be immersed in lake water, in the middle of the lake. « NO, no, you are not having problems yet. Your breathing is fine. Excellent. I am sensing frustration. But no /real/ problems. » He won't let you drown, A'dien, but he might have you irate at the end of some impromptu 'testing' session. His goal is to get you to listen better to /his/ wisdom, his philosophy of life (which serves HIM very well), and to find a certain internal balance in your life. He is not just /your/ dragon. Not good enough. You are /his/ rider, and as such, need to be the best rider available.

Habits

Scratching and Spritzing
Nomi can’t help it. If he’s going to be cat-themed and male, then he’s going to be territorial and in need of some serious training, early on. As a dragonet, she thinks Sanuyeth should be pretty bad about marking his territory, and that means anything you touch, he wants to touch too and mark with his scent: strop of the chin, kneading of the claws, or in extreme cases, peeing on things. His couch will be covered in scratches by the time he’s done with it, and eventually he’ll shred the edge of his ledge as an adult. This is to mark the territory as /his/… and keep those deadly woolie-killing claws in good shape. Fastidious by nature, Sanuyeth won’t mind at all messing up A’dien’s stuff. He doesn’t really see the point of clothing anyway, unless it’s cold, and loves hooking a talon into the hem and cuffs of Ao’s weyrling outfits just to enjoy the sound they make when he shreds them. That you might fall down when he does it is only of minor importance.

Miscellaneous

Image Inspiration: This dragon had to be perfect, for a perfect player and great friend! No pressure or anything. Madri came up with the Mountain Lion, and I've always loved tawny-colored critters, and I wanted to convey power and a sense of feral, lean and solid. I looked up images for 'leaping cougar' and found one whose pose I liked, and basically I used that to come up with the shape and pose of the body. Sanuyeth is sprung, but lean, with a pale underside, the black points of a cougar, and the ochre across his wings, and a long long thick tail for balance. I may have exaggerated the heavy features of his head, but I wanted to make sure no one mistook him for a gold - he's all male. Dignity, power, and that feline grace, I tried to work into the stark lines, but make the overall impression seem fluid, sleek. Nomi provided a sterling description that really helped me imagine where I wanted to go with him. I hope that he works out for Aodien well, and for you, well, and I hope you derive a real joy from RPing him for years to come. :) - Th'deus

In Conclusion…

Those with cougar medicine have past life connections relating to power and leadership. When the cougar selects you as its student be prepared for the ride of your life. It can shred you into little pieces (dissolve karma and identity) then put you back together again with a pure heart and purpose. True leadership through gentle assertiveness is what cougar teaches those with this totem. You would be wise to listen to cougar and let it teach you how to balance intention, power and strength in everything you do.

Sanuyeth won’t always be the easiest creature to live with, but you wouldn’t have it any other way. On those days when things just aren’t going all that well, between you, and you feel like you just don’t understand him at all, it is important to reconnect with your inner puma. We recommend you:

• Hang out near cliffs and ledges
• Be decisive. Make and act on a decision today.
• Take on a leadership role
• Wear turquoise
• Spend time solitary walking in the woods
• Meditate on your path

Or just take him out for Rpee.

//Cougar My Brother My Totem Spirit.

The cougar squats,
His ears are laid back,
Lips curled,
Eyes alert,
Teeth snow white and gleaming,
Snarling,
Gives his impression, of a fearsome face,
Paw slashing, slicing the air,
A menacing posture,
Followed by a piecing penetrating scream,
The cougar is lean and mean,
Tendons, muscles, sinews, bulging, protruding,
From this master of the hunt,
Crouching he posses awesome power,
He’s like a hair pin trigger,
A high tensioned spring,
Ready to explode,
When released he can fly,
Fully stretched,
Fully extended,
Fully alert,
He is a purer hunting machine,
Running in motion,
That’s perpetual,
Beautiful and uncanny to watch,
The cougars game diverse,
His quarry is large and small,
His reputation,
His exploits,
As told by man,
Overstated,
Exaggerated,
Debated,
Myths and lies,
Are unjustified,
Stories of this legend,
By Indians told,
Respect and honor,
In the Cougar they hold,
Totem spirit,
Held,
In spirit and sole,
Makes a warrior of old,
Whole,
In mind and every fiber,
Of his inner being,
In a mystic and magical way.
